The Joy of missing out

Recently Merriam Webster added the millineal term “FOMO” to the dictionary. So what is exactly is FOMO?? and do all millineal identify with it? FOMO in its essence captures our desire to make the most of this limited period offer that is life. Its all about making our time in the world count. We are afraid of missing out on all things which our society has earmarked as “The it Experiences”. Last weekend, I was in Mumbai doing touristy things (even though I visit often) and every restaurant/hangout place was chock-a-block with the millennial crowd dressed up in all their finery on the lookout for the latest “it” experience. A group sitting on the table next to ours excitedly planning their next trip to Thailand over the coming long weekend. It was apparently a must visit destination and almost everyone they knew had already been there over the summer. This is one conversation I could identify with, as a millennial myself, I understand the pressure we are all under to live our best life. We are always playing catch up no matter how hard we try which means constantly updating our Netflix watch list, shop the latest sales and of course visiting the trendiest destinations (guilty of all!) However, as of late I am enjoying what has been dubbed as “JOMO” or the Joy of missing out. As I sit here in my apartment writing this, my dear friends are enjoying a weekend getaway to Coorg. However a Sunday spend watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S, cooking and doing household chores didn’t seems like such a bad idea after a hectic week of work. There is something freeing about disconnecting with the world and lounging around in PJ’s once in a while and I intend to do this more often. Cheers to a at home weekend!
